Department of Chemical Science

About Us

The edict establishing Bingham University, Karu, was enacted in 2005. The University took off during the 2005/2006 Academic session at ECWA Theology Seminary, Jos, as its temporary campus with students in the Faculty of Science and Technology, Humanities, Social and Management Science and College of Medicine.

The Department of Chemical Sciences is the sixth Department of the University in order of inception. The Department commenced its activities in the 2012/2013 session offering a four years program with two-degree options: B. Sc. Chemistry and B. Sc. Industrial Chemistry at the undergraduate level and aims at Analytical Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry and Nano Chemistry as areas of specialization at postgraduate level. Guided by the University’s philosophy of “creating Christ-centered graduates”, the program is designed to produce Christian-based God-fearing graduates who appreciate chemistry as the index of industrial development, the centrality of chemical science to human well-being, as well as its inevitable linkage to, and interactions with, other branches of science.

The Philosophy and Objectives of the program are:
  • To provide to students a thorough grounding in the knowledge and physical principles of chemical compounds and processes.
  • To give students a thorough training in the theory, instrumentation and practice of a wide range of analytical techniques and technological advancement.
  • To sharpen their skills, analytical mind and initiative in confronting and solving analytical problems.
  • To develop students who will meet the national and international manpower needs in all areas of chemical industries.
  • To develop the research and development base of the students.
  • To inculcate the culture of science in the students with a view to motivating them for self-reliance and technological development.
Accreditation:

The Department got full Accreditation by the National University Commission in 2016.

Certification:

It is mandatory for Chemistry Students to obtain certification in the following:

  • Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN)
  • Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON)
Career Opportunities:

Graduate are employable in chemical and related industries, such as:

  • Agrochemicals;
  • Metallurgical;
  • Petrochemicals
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Plastics and polymers
  • Toiletries

Besides, there are also job opportunities other sectors, like the food and drink industry, utilities and research, health and medical organisations, government, and scientific research organisations and agencies.

Academic sector is another lucrative sector for chemist such as schools, colleges and universities, as well as by computer software development companies, environment consultancies and water companies.
