The course in demography is aimed at introducing students to human population, in terms of size, structure and distribution, including how to measure population parameters and sources of primary and secondary data regarding these population parameters, interpretation of such population data, as well as the importance and use of population data for socio-economic planning. Factors that influence changes in population size, structure, distribution and migration, consequences of population changes on these factors. The content covers, sources of population and health data; measures of fertility and mortality; Population theories, population growth through history; Population projections; Demographic transition including how such transition affect other factors such as health, nutrition and disease patterns; Interaction between population and health including technology, population and environment including climate change. Population policies and socio-economic development with focus on the Nigerian Population policies.
