Bingham University recently held an induction and oath-taking ceremony for 53 graduating students of the College of Medical Sciences.
The ECWA President, Rev. (Dr.) Job Ayuba Bagat Mallam, represented by ECWA General Secretary Rev. Dr. Ayuba Asheshe congratulated and charged the new doctors to uphold the values of the medical profession by adding value to people and be good ambassadors of ECWA which has provided the platform for their training through Bingham University. He stated that ECWA is committed to upholding national values where everyone will be proud. He reminded them to be focused and willing to serve selflessly.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Haruna K. Ayuba, in his remarks, noted that the university has trained over 800 medical doctors in its 20 years of existence, with an average of 40 per year. He highlighted the university's commitment to boosting infrastructure, promoting research, and advancing public health initiatives. Professor Ayuba emphasized the importance of professionalism and ethical standards in medical practice, citing the example of Jesus Christ as a guiding light for the inductees. He encouraged them to show compassion, empathy, and patience in discharging their responsibilities.
He further advised the new doctors to subject themselves to mentoring by senior doctors and to reflect on their motivations for choosing the medical profession. He raised concerns about the "Japa syndrome," where medical doctors are leaving Nigeria for other countries, and posed reflective questions to the inductees, asking them to consider their motivations for choosing the medical profession and the impact of their departure on the country's healthcare system.
The Vice-Chancellor commended the National Universities Commission (NUC) for granting the university full accreditation status to run medical programs and approval to partner with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine to offer a joint postgraduate degree program in public health.
The Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Dr. Fatima Kyari, represented by Dr. Enejo Abdul, noted that the rigorous standards endured during medical training are not arbitrary obstacles but carefully constructed safeguards designed to protect human life. He emphasized that the well-regulated medical education is crucial in Nigeria, where healthcare challenges are complex and resources are often limited.
The Medical Elder, Prof. Ayuba Ibrahim Zoakah, advised the inductees to excel beyond their teachers, which requires continuous training, innovation, and hard work. He charged them to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria and avoid the distraction of the "Japa syndrome."
The Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Prof. Haroun Omeiza Isah, noted that the 53 new doctors were the 14th set in the series since the inception of the university. He called on new doctors to subscribe to hard work, honesty, integrity, empathy, excellence, and dedication in their future endeavors.
