Bingham University has taken a significant step toward advancing research, innovation, and national development through a strategic engagement with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) in Abuja.

Speaking during the visit and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Haruna Kuje Ayuba, expressed profound appreciation to the Director-General and Chief Executive of NASRDA, Dr. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, for the warm reception accorded to the University delegation.

The Vice Chancellor congratulated Dr. Adepoju on his appointment, noting that his leadership role was well deserved given his long-standing experience within the Agency. He offered prayers for wisdom and an impactful tenure, emphasizing that NASRDA was in capable hands.

Prof. Haruna highlighted that although Bingham University is relatively young, just over 20 years old, it has grown into a comprehensive institution with 15 faculties that include programmes that align with NASRDA’s mandate. These include Environmental Sciences, Computing, Architecture, Health Sciences, and Medicine, among others.

He added that Council has approved the establishment of a state-of-the-art Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Laboratory, with construction nearing completion. He expressed optimism that NASRDA would support capacity building through training in GIS, donation of equipment and related applications once the facility is commissioned.

In his remarks, Dr. Adepoju , reaffirmed the importance of strong collaboration between universities and research institutions as a sustainable pathway to national development. He noted that meaningful national development can only be achieved when academic institutions, research bodies, and industry actors work together in a balanced and mutually beneficial relationship. He described NASRDA as a collaborative platform that supports the growth of universities and research institutions, emphasizing that academic pursuit remains central to the Agency’s mandate.

According to him, many technological breakthroughs originate within university departments before advancing through research institutions and eventually into industry, creating a continuous cycle of innovation, commercialization, and economic growth.

The Director-General stressed the need for Nigerian universities to strengthen capacity and advance research in order to keep pace with global technological developments. He added that science and technology cut across multiple disciplines, noting that the partnership with Bingham University would span several academic and research areas.

Dr. Adepoju  reaffirmed NASRDA’s commitment to deepening collaboration with Bingham University to enhance capacity building, strengthen research output, and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s technological and socio-economic development.

The ceremony concluded with the formal signing of the MoU, marking the beginning of a mutually beneficial partnership.
