Directorate Of Research And Innovations, Bingham University Holds One-Day Sensitization And Capacity Building Workshop

The Directorate of Research and Innovation, Bingham University, held a one-day Sensitization and Capacity Building Workshop themed "From Ideas to Assets: Advancing Patents, Copyright, Trademarks, and Innovation for Academic and National Development."

 

The workshop is aimed  at promoting Intellectual Property (IP) awareness and commercializing innovations, is part of the Directorate's efforts to drive research and innovation focusing on national development. Prof. Istifanus S. Zabadi, Director of Research and Innovations, encouraged participants to engage fully and gain insights on protecting and commercializing innovations.

 

Prof. Okoli, B.J., representing the Vice-Chancellor, highlighted the university's commitment to translating knowledge into tangible solutions for society. He commended the Directorate of Research and Innovation, led by Prof. Istifanus Zabadi, for organizing the timely workshop.

 

The Representative of Director General of Nigerian Copyright Commission Mr Daniels Caleb, highlighted Nigeria's need for homegrown solutions and universities' role in driving economic growth. He pledged partnership and support, urging Bingham University to lead in transforming knowledge into assets and innovation into impact.

 

Also in his paper, Associate Professor Paul Angya, emphasized the importance of intellectual property (IP) in driving innovation and development, highlighting the need for universities to protect and commercialize their research outputs. He explained the basics of patents, trademarks, and copyrights, and their significance in academia and the economy.

 

Dr. Angya outlined steps to secure IP rights, the role of institutions like NOTAP and WIPO, and the need for Bingham University to adopt a comprehensive IP policy and establish the Office of Patency and Innovation.

 

He concluded that IP protection is crucial for institutional excellence and national progress, urging the university to transform knowledge into assets.

 

The representative of Director General of World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Communications Officer, Mr Taiwo Farai revealed that WIPO supports technology and innovation in Nigeria through various initiatives like WIPO Resources, WIPO Academy, and Technology and Innovation Support Centers (TISCs).

 

Participants at the workshop were encouraged to protect original work, navigate intellectual property laws, and monetize innovations, enhance Bingham University's standing and contribute to national development.
