Biography

Dr. Gabriel Oluwabunmi Anyanwu MNYA is a lecturer at Department of Biochemistry, Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa State, Nigeria. He hails from Imo State and he is married with a son. He was awarded PhD in Biochemistry (Nutrition and Food Chemistry) by the University of Benin, Benin City, Nigeria in May, 2017. He is proudly an alumnus of University of Ibadan and Federal University of Technology, Yola (presently, Modibbo Adama University, Yola) where he was awarded MSc and BTech in Biochemistry respectively. My research interest centres on Nutrition, particularly understanding obesity as a medical condition, discovering antiobesity agents from natural products and elucidating their mechanism of action using well designed biochemical and molecular biology studies. Also, I have interest in studying the biochemical or physiological effects of natural products on obesity linked health problems (e.g Diabetes, Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, Dyslipidemia, Cardiovascular diseases, etc.) in in vitro and in vivo preclinical models.

I have experience with the following research approaches and technologies: enzyme inhibitory activity;  anti-adipogenic and lipolytic properties of plants on cultured and differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes; hormonal studies using ELISA kits; DNA and RNA extraction and expression using PCR; fractionation, isolation, characterization and structurally elucidation of the pure compounds from medicinal plants using techniques like IR, UV, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, EIMS, COSY, NOESY, HSQC and HMBC; and handling of cell lines and laboratory animals.

I have supervised MSc and BSc students. I have held administrative positions such as Head of Biochemistry Department, University SIWES Coordinator, Faculty Assistant Exam Officer, Department SIWES Coordinator and Department Examination Officer. I have published a total of 36 publications of which 9 articles are in Scopus-indexed journals.

I have presented my research work in national and international conferences in Nigeria and other countries like United Kingdom and Pakistan.

I have received the Award of 2014 CIIT-TWAS Sandwich Postgraduate Fellowship (FR number: 3240280470) by The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Italy and COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), Islamabad, Pakistan.

I am a member of scientific associations like Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Nigerian Society for Experimental Biology      , American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and American Society for Nutrition.
