Published on: Nov 4th, 2026
Building on more than a decade of collaboration, Bingham University and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), United Kingdom, are exploring new opportunities to strengthen research, expand postgraduate training and translate research findings into practical health solutions.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Kuje Ayuba, led a university delegation to LSTM from 11th to 16th October 2026 for strategic discussions aimed at advancing the partnership through the University’s Zankli Research Institute. The team was received by Prof. Bertie Squire, LSTM’s Pro Vice-Chancellor for Partnerships, on behalf of its Vice-Chancellor.
A key focus of the visit was affordability as both institutions reviewed their joint PhD programme in Public Health.
Prof. Ayuba highlighted the high cost of the programme as a major factor affecting enrolment and expressed the University’s willingness to explore alternatives that would make it more financially accessible to interested candidates. Discussions also considered alternatives to the programme’s on-site component, alongside curriculum development, staffing, marketing and student recruitment.
The visit also provided an opportunity to review the institutions’ longstanding tuberculosis research collaboration and explore further areas of mutual interest.
Discussions covered clinical sciences, international public health, tropical disease biology, vector biology and snakebite research. The team also explored approaches to turning research outputs into new interventions and products, connecting scientific discovery with practical health needs.
The delegation also participated in planning discussions for the Zankli Research Institute’s 10th anniversary celebrations and the LSTM Alumni Event, scheduled for 2nd to 5th November 2026 in Abuja.
The visit concluded with the development of an action template to guide follow-up activities and advance the partnership’s agreed priorities.
Other members of the Bingham University delegation were the Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Andrew Haruna; Bursar, Mr Paul Yusuf; Legal Officer, Barr. Anne Madugu; and Director of the Zankli Research Institute, Assoc. Prof John Bimba.
