Bingham University’s Ambassador Bulu Lolo Centre for Diplomacy, Conflict, Peace, and Plural Studies, , in collaboration with the Department of Political Science hosted a compelling Mock African Union Summit centered on the theme: “Intra-African Trade: An Unrealistic Expectation?” The event brought together students, academics, and distinguished guests in an intellectually stimulating simulation of continental diplomacy.

In his opening address, the Director of the Centre, Dr. Olushola Magbadelo, welcomed participants and expressed deep appreciation for their presence. He described the summit as more than a routine academic exercise, emphasizing that it serves as “an academic laboratory for diplomacy.” According to him, by replicating the protocols, negotiations, and deliberations of actual African Union summits, students are able to develop critical diplomatic and analytical skills that extend beyond the classroom.

Speaking on the theme, Dr. Magbadelo noted that student delegates would assume the roles of African presidents and heads of state, engaging critically with the prospects and challenges of deepening intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He highlighted the importance of examining these issues within the context of current continental dynamics, particularly the rising wave of ultra-nationalism, which continues to test the balance between national sovereignty and regional integration.

He also took a moment to appreciate the family of the late Professor Okello Oculi for honoring the invitation to the event. Professor Oculi was recognized as the pioneer who introduced the mock summit concept at Ahmadu Bello University, leaving behind a legacy of academic innovation and experiential learning.

The event also featured goodwill messages from key stakeholders. The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who was represented by Mrs. Sulu Olabisi, commended the university, the Centre, and the Department for organizing an initiative that equips students with practical skills in diplomacy, negotiation, and policymaking. She described the theme as both timely and relevant, noting its significance for Africa’s economic growth and unity.

Delivering the keynote address , the special guest of honor Mr. Ayo Adewuyi, the Executive Director (News) NTA who was represented by Mr. Mohammad Ali, expressed admiration for the students’ performance. Speaking from his perspective as a journalist, he remarked that the delegates spoke with the authority and confidence of actual heads of state. He described their contributions as highly insightful and educational, and encouraged the university to publish the proceedings online to reach a wider global audience.

The summit featured a series of thought-provoking presentations from student delegates representing key international and continental institutions. The “President of the African Development Bank” asserted strong support for initiatives that promote regional integration, economic growth, job creation, and sustainability. Similarly, representatives of the World Trade Organization, the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, the African Union Chairman, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Secretary-General of the African Continental Free Trade Area, and the Chairperson of the Pan-African Parliament all argued that intra-African trade is both achievable and necessary.

In addition, delegates representing fifteen African countries—including Senegal, Nigeria, South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco, Rwanda, Côte d’Ivoire, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Congo, Niger Republic, Algeria, Tanzania, and Uganda—collectively affirmed that intra-African trade is not an unrealistic expectation but a shared continental goal.

A special highlight of the event was the presentation of a plaque to the family of the late Professor Okello Oculi. In receiving the honor, the family expressed heartfelt gratitude to Bingham University for preserving and celebrating his enduring legacy.

The summit concluded with a closing remark by the Head of the Department of Political Science, Dr. Sabo Robert, who extended appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Haruna Kuje Ayuba, the university management, and all participants whose efforts contributed to the success of the event.
